Failure of eruption of multiple teeth

Last edited: 4/23/2026

Overview

Failure of eruption of multiple teeth, also known as impacted teeth or non-eruption, refers to teeth that fail to emerge into their functional positions within the dental arch due to various etiologies including mechanical obstruction, genetic factors, or systemic conditions impacting jaw development and function 2122.

Diagnosis

  • Clinical examination and dental radiographs (panoramic, periapical) to identify impacted teeth and assess their position and relationship with adjacent structures 21.
  • Assessment of occlusion and facial aesthetics to evaluate functional and aesthetic implications 21.
  • Consideration of patient history for potential systemic factors or genetic predispositions 21.
  • Management

  • Orthodontic Intervention: Use of orthodontic appliances to create space and facilitate eruption, often combined with surgical exposure if necessary 21.
  • Surgical Exposure: Surgical procedures to uncover impacted teeth, followed by orthodontic traction to guide eruption 21.
  • Surgical Removal: In cases where eruption is not feasible or advisable, extraction may be considered 21.
  • Special Populations

  • Pediatrics: Early intervention is crucial; impacted teeth can affect jaw growth and alignment. Orthodontic monitoring and timely intervention are recommended 21.
  • Elderly: Consideration of bone density and overall health status; surgical risks may be higher, necessitating careful evaluation and possibly less invasive approaches 21.
  • Key Recommendations

  • Early Orthodontic Assessment: Regular dental and orthodontic evaluations to identify impacted teeth early, especially in pediatric patients 21 (Evidence: Strong).
  • Multidisciplinary Approach: Collaboration between orthodontists and oral surgeons for optimal management strategies 21 (Evidence: Moderate).
  • Patient-Specific Treatment Planning: Tailor treatment plans based on individual anatomical, systemic, and functional factors 21 (Evidence: Moderate).
  • Monitoring for Complications: Regular follow-up to monitor for complications such as infection or cyst formation around impacted teeth 21 (Evidence: Expert opinion).
