Epidemiology

Pediatric aspiration of airway foreign body is the admitting diagnosis for around 2000 children annually in US hospitals [PMID:33036654].

Clinical Presentation

Airway foreign body aspiration in pediatric patients typically presents with sudden onset coughing spells, respiratory distress, or choking episodes [PMID:33036654].

Diagnosis

Patients undergo radiographic evaluation including chest x-ray or airway CT scan; however, rigid bronchoscopy is frequently required for definitive diagnosis, especially based on age and clinical suspicion [PMID:33036654].
