Disseminated perinatal varicella

Last edited: 4/10/2026

Overview

Disseminated perinatal varicella refers to a severe manifestation of varicella-zoster virus (VZV) infection occurring around the time of birth. Primary VZV infection during pregnancy can lead to serious maternal complications and adverse fetal outcomes, including congenital varicella syndrome 1.

Diagnosis

Management

Special Populations

  • Primary VZV infection during pregnancy poses significant risks to both mother and fetus, including congenital varicella syndrome and serious maternal complications 1.
  • In Iran, approximately 19% of reproductive-age women are susceptible to VZV infection due to the absence of routine vaccination 1.
  • Seroprevalence of VZV antibodies among reproductive-age women in Iran is 81%, with higher seroprevalence observed in pregnant women (88%) 1.
  • Key Recommendations

  • Consider VZV vaccination for reproductive-age women to prevent primary infection during pregnancy 1. (Evidence: Moderate)
