Overview

Emergency laparotomy is a surgical procedure associated with significant postoperative morbidity and mortality 23. Patients undergoing emergency laparotomy often experience a decline in health-related quality of life (QoL) postoperatively 3.

Key Recommendations

  • Health-related quality of life (QoL) is an important outcome to assess after emergency laparotomy to improve informed consent and surgical care 2.
  • Postoperative QoL after emergency laparotomy can be worse than baseline, with recovery to baseline QoL potentially taking 3 to 12 months 3.
  • There is a need for further research in the systematic development of patient-reported outcomes for use in emergency surgery 2.
