Postprocedural infection

Last edited: 4/13/2026

Overview

Postprocedural infection refers to infections that occur following invasive medical procedures, potentially involving any anatomical site depending on the procedure performed. These infections can range from superficial to deep tissue infections and may involve microorganisms introduced during the procedure or from endogenous sources 2530.

Diagnosis

  • Clinical signs of infection (fever, localized pain, swelling, redness) 25.
  • Laboratory tests: Elevated white blood cell count, C-reactive protein levels 25.
  • Imaging studies: Useful for deep infections to assess extent and complications 25.
  • Cultures from the site or blood samples for pathogen identification 25.
  • Management

  • Antibiotics: Initiate broad-spectrum antibiotics based on suspected pathogens and local resistance patterns, then narrow spectrum guided by culture results 25.
  • Source control: Remove infected devices or debride infected tissues as necessary 25.
  • Supportive care: Fluid management, pain control, and monitoring for systemic complications 25.
  • Close monitoring: Regular assessment for signs of worsening infection or systemic involvement 25.
  • Special Populations

  • Pediatrics: Increased vigilance for signs of sepsis due to rapid progression; consider non-invasive diagnostic methods 7.
  • Elderly: Higher risk of complications; tailored antibiotic therapy considering comorbidities and renal function 25.
  • Comorbidities: Adjust management based on underlying conditions (e.g., immunosuppression, chronic diseases) 25.
  • Key Recommendations

  • Early identification and intervention: Promptly diagnose and treat postprocedural infections to prevent systemic complications (Evidence: Moderate 25).
  • Source control measures: Implement surgical or procedural source control when indicated to reduce infection burden (Evidence: Moderate 25).
  • Antibiotic stewardship: Use targeted antibiotic therapy guided by culture and sensitivity results to minimize resistance (Evidence: Moderate 25).
  • Monitor closely: Regularly monitor patients for signs of infection progression or complications, especially in high-risk groups (Evidence: Expert opinion 25).
