Overview

Lung cancer is the second most common cancer and the leading cause of cancer death in the US 1. Squamous cell carcinoma is a type of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) 1. Early-stage lung cancer has a better prognosis and is more amenable to treatment 1.

Diagnosis

  • Low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) is used for lung cancer screening in high-risk individuals 1.
  • Management

  • Screening with LDCT has a moderate net benefit in persons at high risk of lung cancer 1.
  • Special Populations

  • Screening is recommended for adults aged 50 to 80 years who have a 20 pack-year smoking history and currently smoke or have quit within the past 15 years 1.
  • Key Recommendations

  • Annual screening for lung cancer with LDCT has a moderate net benefit in persons at high risk of lung cancer based on age, total cumulative exposure to tobacco smoking, and current smoking status or recent cessation 1. (Evidence: Moderate)
  • Screening should be considered for adults aged 50 to 80 years with a 20 pack-year smoking history who currently smoke or have quit within the past 15 years 1. (Evidence: Moderate)
