Overview

Neisseria gonorrhoeae proctitis is an inflammatory syndrome of the anal canal and/or rectum caused by gonococcal infection 1. It can be transmitted via genital-anal mucosal contact, digital contact, or toys 1. The majority of gonococcal rectal infections are asymptomatic and detected only by laboratory testing 1.

Diagnosis

  • A presumptive diagnosis is made based on symptoms and signs, with a definitive diagnosis confirmed by laboratory tests 1.
  • Exclusion of anorectal infections is indicated with a history of receptive anal contact as part of standard STI screening 1.
