Paucigranulocytic asthma

Last edited: 4/10/2026

Overview

Paucigranulocytic asthma is a phenotype of asthma characterized by low eosinophil counts in the sputum and blood 1. This phenotype may be associated with different treatment responses and underlying inflammatory pathways compared to eosinophilic asthma 1.

Key Recommendations

  • Pleuran (a β-glucan) in combination with vitamin C may improve asthma control in children aged 7 to 17 years with partially controlled perennial asthma 1.
  • Pleuran/vitamin C combination may reduce the frequency of respiratory tract infections in children with partially controlled perennial asthma 1.
  • Further research is needed on racial inequities in asthma specialist settings, given that specialist care is recommended for Black and Hispanic patients who disproportionately experience poor asthma outcomes 2.
