Epidemiology
In a study of 131 patients undergoing hip abductor tendon repair, 29% (n=38) had confirmed L4 to S1 disease, and an additional 12% (n=16) showed radiographic evidence of nerve compression at L4 to S1 levels [PMID:38871064].
Clinical Presentation
Patients identified with L4 to S1 pathology were significantly older (mean age 67 years) compared to those without such pathology (mean age 61 years) [PMID:38871064].
Management
Given the high prevalence of associated lumbo-sacral spine pathology (over 40% of patients), a thorough assessment including imaging and electrophysiological studies of the lumbar spine is advised for optimal management [PMID:38871064].
