Gastrointestinal stromal tumor of adrenal gland

Last edited: 4/10/2026

Overview

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are mesenchymal neoplasms originating from the interstitial cells of Cajal. While most commonly found in the stomach and small intestine, they can rarely occur in ectopic locations, including the adrenal gland 123. Adrenal GISTs are exceedingly rare 3.

Diagnosis

  • Adrenal myelolipomas, a type of benign adrenal tumor, are typically asymptomatic and can be identified by their fatty nature on CT scans 23.
  • Surgery for adrenal myelolipomas is considered due to large size or associated discomfort 2.
  • Management

  • Surgical removal is indicated for large adrenal myelolipomas causing discomfort 2.
  • Special Populations

  • No information available in the provided abstracts.
