Overview

Tuberculosis (TB) management is frequently complicated by comorbid alcohol use disorder (AUD), which is associated with poor compliance to anti-tuberculosis treatment and inferior clinical outcomes 1. The global prevalence of AUD among patients with TB is estimated to be approximately 30% 1.

Special Populations

  • Alcohol Use Disorder: Patients with TB and concurrent AUD represent a high-risk group for treatment failure due to poor adherence to medication regimens 1.
  • Key Recommendations

  • Screen patients with tuberculosis for alcohol use disorder to identify those at increased risk for poor treatment compliance and suboptimal outcomes 1. (Evidence: Strong)
