Supplementary motor cortex frontal lobe epilepsy

Last edited:

Pathophysiology

The contralesional SMA contributes to recovery from SMA syndrome by replacing the function of the lesioned hemisphere through sensorimotor network (SMN) remodeling [PMID:35507429].

Clinical Presentation

Patients often exhibit global or partial akinesia within 24 hours following resection of a glioma from the supplementary motor area, with recovery spanning weeks to months [PMID:35507429].

Prognosis & Follow-up

Recovery from SMA syndrome is prolonged by smaller regions of contralesional SMA activation preoperatively and by the onset of paralysis 7 days postoperatively [PMID:35507429].
