Choroid plexus cyst

Last edited:

Epidemiology

Cysts of the choroid plexus were identified ultrasonographically in 38 consecutive fetuses between 15 and 28 weeks' gestation, indicating a relatively frequent occurrence in this gestational period [PMID:2644832].

Clinical Presentation

A 15-month-old boy presented with increased head circumference and a bony deformity in the left parietal region caused by a giant choroid plexus cyst [PMID:33057748].

Differential Diagnosis

The case highlights the importance of considering choroid plexus cysts in the differential diagnosis for intraventricular masses in pediatric patients [PMID:33057748].

No association between choroid plexus cysts and trisomy 18 was identified in this series, despite initial concerns about such a link [PMID:2644832].

Management

The patient underwent a craniotomy for open resection of the giant cyst and made an excellent recovery [PMID:33057748].

Prognosis & Follow-up

Of the 30 fetuses with repeat ultrasonograms after 24 weeks, 30 showed complete resolution of the cysts, and 36 patients delivered normal neonates at term with good outcomes [PMID:2644832].
