Pathophysiology
Postrhinoplasty nasal mucoceles are believed to result from the growth of ectopic nasal respiratory epithelium displaced during the rhinoplasty procedure [PMID:24196012].
These cysts are due to entrapment of mucosal remnants in the subcutaneous space [PMID:8362177].
Epidemiology
Although most cases present within weeks, this report describes an extremely delayed dorsal nasal mucocele presenting 21 years after septorhinoplasty [PMID:24196012].
Although cystic structures are common in the upper respiratory tract, the authors note that the development of mucous cysts specifically in the nasal cavity, especially in bilateral and multiple forms, is very rare [PMID:6464836].
Clinical Presentation
Mahler D, Tovi F, and Zirkin H describe an unusual case of bilateral, multiple glandular cysts originating from both inferior turbinates, highlighting their occurrence as an occasional finding during rhinoplasty [PMID:6464836].
Differential Diagnosis
The paper discusses the importance of distinguishing nasal glandular cysts from other cystic lesions in the nasal cavity, emphasizing the rarity of mucous cysts in this region [PMID:6464836].
Management
The aesthetically bothersome mucocele was successfully removed using an open rhinoplasty approach [PMID:24196012].
Surgical excision with the open approach is a reliable treatment for nasal dorsal cysts [PMID:8362177].
Prognosis & Follow-up
In the presented case, no sign of recurrence was noted after surgical excision and a follow-up period of four years [PMID:8362177].
