Last edited: 4/10/2026

Overview

Gonococcal urethritis is an infection of the urethra caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae. It is a common sexually transmitted infection that can affect both men and women.

Diagnosis

Molecular testing, including pooled samples, is recommended for Neisseria gonorrhoeae* (NG) 1.
  • Pooled testing for NG demonstrates high sensitivity (98.4%) and specificity compared to individual testing 1.
  • Management

  • (No management information provided in the abstracts.)
  • Special Populations

  • (No special population information provided in the abstracts.)
  • Key Recommendations

  • Pooled testing from multiple individuals for Neisseria gonorrhoeae is highly sensitive and specific compared with individual testing 1. (Evidence: Moderate)
  • Pooled testing has the potential to reduce the cost of screening in populations for which single anatomic site screening is recommended 1. (Evidence: Moderate)
