Non-diabetic hypoglycemia

Last edited: 4/23/2026

Overview

Non-diabetic hypoglycemia refers to episodes of low blood glucose levels in individuals without diabetes, often triggered by medications, excessive alcohol consumption, or underlying endocrine disorders. It can present with symptoms similar to diabetic hypoglycemia but occurs in the absence of diabetes mellitus.

Diagnosis

  • Clinical Symptoms: Symptoms include confusion, sweating, tremors, and in severe cases, seizures or coma. 12345678910111213141516171819202122232425262728293031323334353637383940414243444546474849505152535455565758596061626364656667686970
  • Laboratory Tests: Blood glucose levels typically <70 mg/dL (3.9 mmol/L) during symptoms. Additional tests may include insulin levels, C-peptide, and thyroid function tests to rule out specific causes. 12345678910111213141516171819202122232425262728293031323334353637383940414243444546474849505152535455565758596061626364656667686970
  • Management

  • Immediate Treatment: Administer fast-acting carbohydrates (e.g., glucose tablets, juice) to raise blood glucose levels quickly. 12345678910111213141516171819202122232425262728293031323334353637383940414243444546474849505152535455565758596061626364656667686970
  • Long-term Management: Identify and manage underlying causes (e.g., medication adjustment, alcohol cessation, endocrine evaluation). 12345678910111213141516171819202122232425262728293031323334353637383940414243444546474849505152535455565758596061626364656667686970
