Perianal streptococcal infection of newborn

Epidemiology

A single strain of group A streptococci was identified in wound infections of four patients post-orthopedic surgery, traced back to an anal carrier among the surgical team [PMID:320297].

Clinical Presentation

Two patients developed scarlet fever, which indicated the presence of a streptococcal epidemic among those undergoing surgery [PMID:320297].

Management

Identification of a surgeon as an asymptomatic carrier highlights the importance of screening healthcare workers for streptococcal carriage to prevent surgical site infections [PMID:320297].
