Loa loa lymphadenopathy

Last edited:

Epidemiology

Individuals with more than 8,000 mf/mL of Loa loa microfilariae are at higher risk of severe adverse reactions to ivermectin, with risks escalating dramatically with microfilarial density [PMID:41557726].

Differential Diagnosis

The risk of severe adverse reactions following ivermectin administration increases significantly with Loa loa microfilarial density, reaching up to 37.0% in individuals with 100,000 mf/mL [PMID:41557726].

Management

Two albendazole regimens were evaluated for treating hypermicrofilaraemic loiasis in adults, indicating potential as a safer alternative to ivermectin in high-parasitic-load cases [PMID:41557726].
