Gas gangrene caused by clostridium perfringens

Last edited:

Management

Pretreatment with buprenorphine and morphine in mice prevented death from clostridial myonecrosis caused by Clostridium perfringens [PMID:24550443]. Treatment with buprenorphine after infection onset also arrested disease progression.

The protective effect of buprenorphine was specific to C. perfringens-mediated myonecrosis and did not extend to infections caused by C. septicum [PMID:24550443].

Key Recommendations

These findings suggest a novel therapeutic strategy for C. perfringens-mediated myonecrosis, warranting investigation in clinical settings [PMID:24550443]. (Evidence: Expert opinion)
