Cylindroma

Last edited:

Clinical Presentation

A 59-year-old woman presented with an ill-defined left breast mass, highlighting that cylindroma, typically found in the skin, can rarely occur in the breast [PMID:15581173].

Diagnosis

Fine needle aspiration cytology showed small, uniform cells with oval nuclei and finely granular cytoplasm, closely resembling adenoid cystic carcinoma, necessitating further biopsy for definitive diagnosis [PMID:15581173].

Aspiration cytology from dermal eccrine cylindromas can morphologically resemble adenoid cystic carcinomas, necessitating histopathologic confirmation [PMID:6306974].

Differential Diagnosis

The presence of globular, extracellular material in cytologic samples should prompt consideration of cylindroma, alongside other basaloid tumors like adenoid cystic carcinoma [PMID:15581173].

Due to overlapping cytologic features, dermal eccrine cylindroma must be included in the differential diagnosis alongside adenoid cystic carcinoma [PMID:6306974].

Management

To avoid unnecessary extensive surgery, a restricted excision should be performed to obtain histopathologic diagnosis in such cases [PMID:6306974].
