Last edited: 4/10/2026

Overview

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are common bacterial infections. Increasing antimicrobial resistance poses a challenge to effective treatment 1. Klebsiella species are a common cause of UTIs 1.

Diagnosis

Management

  • Sulopenem demonstrated noninferiority to amoxicillin/clavulanate for uncomplicated UTIs 1.
  • Fosfomycin was used in a study comparing antibiotic treatment to cranberry extract for uncomplicated UTIs 2.
  • Cranberry extract showed a decrease in patient complaints and increased well-being compared to fosfomycin in uncomplicated UTIs 2.
  • Special Populations

    Key Recommendations

  • Sulopenem is a potential treatment option for uncomplicated urinary tract infections, showing comparable efficacy to amoxicillin/clavulanate 1. (Evidence: Strong)
  • Cranberry extract may be a favorable alternative to antibiotics for uncomplicated and simple urinary tract infections, improving patient well-being 2. (Evidence: Strong)
