Acute mitral regurgitation

Overview

Acute mitral regurgitation (MR) is a severe valvular disorder characterized by significant hemodynamic instability and high morbidity and mortality rates if not promptly addressed. It often necessitates urgent intervention to prevent progressive heart failure and hemodynamic collapse. 136

Diagnosis

  • Clinical Presentation: Symptoms include dyspnea, fatigue, and signs of heart failure.
  • Echocardiography: Essential for diagnosing MR, quantifying severity (using regurgitant volume, v-wave pressure, and effective regurgitant orifice area), and assessing left ventricular function.
  • Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing: Provides physiological assessment post-repair. 479
