Adjustment reaction in infancy

Last edited: 4/10/2026

Overview

Adjustment reaction is a condition characterized by emotional or behavioral symptoms that arise in response to an identifiable stressor 1. These reactions typically occur within three months of the onset of the stressor and are associated with significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or academic functioning 1.

Diagnosis

  • Diagnosis is based on the presence of emotional or behavioral symptoms in response to an identifiable stressor 1.
  • Symptoms must cause marked distress that is out of proportion to the severity or intensity of the stressor 1.
  • Symptoms must cause clinically significant impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning 1.
  • The symptoms do not meet the criteria for another mental disorder and do not represent normal bereavement 1.
  • Management

  • Psychosocial interventions are effective in managing emotional and behavioral problems 2.
  • Psychosocial interventions are more effective in reducing post-traumatic stress symptoms compared to emotional and behavioral problems and depression 2.
  • Special Populations

  • Psychosocial interventions have been studied among orphans to manage post-traumatic stress symptoms, emotional and behavioral problems, and depression 2.
  • Key Recommendations

  • Psychosocial interventions should be considered for managing emotional and behavioral problems in adjustment reactions 2. (Evidence: Moderate)
  • Psychosocial interventions are particularly effective in reducing post-traumatic stress symptoms associated with adjustment reactions 2. (Evidence: Moderate)
