Papillary hyperplasia of palate

Last edited: 4/22/2026

Overview

Intravascular papillary endothelial hyperplasia (IPEH), also known as Masson's tumor, is a rare benign lesion characterized by excessive proliferation of endothelial cells within blood vessels, often following a thrombotic event 12.

Diagnosis

  • Histological Confirmation: Essential for definitive diagnosis, showing papillary structures composed of endothelial cells with a connective core 12.
  • Imaging: MRI and Doppler ultrasound may show heterogeneous signal intensities and masses, aiding in clinical suspicion but not definitive diagnosis 3.
  • Differential Diagnosis: Includes hematoma, lymphangioma, hemangioma, and angiosarcoma 2.
  • Management

  • Surgical Resection: Recommended for symptomatic lesions or parental concern, aiming for complete removal to prevent recurrence 2.
  • Follow-Up: Necessary for monitoring residual lesions, as incomplete resection can lead to persistent symptoms 2.
  • Special Populations

  • Pediatrics: IPEH can occur in children, presenting as painful subcutaneous masses; surgical intervention is often required 2.
  • Key Recommendations

  • Histological Examination is Crucial for Diagnosis (Evidence: Strong 12).
  • Surgical Excision Should Be Considered for Symptomatic Lesions (Evidence: Moderate 2).
  • Post-Surgical Follow-Up is Essential to Monitor for Residual Disease (Evidence: Expert opinion 2).
