Inflammation of pancreas caused by alcohol

Last edited: 4/10/2026

Overview

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is associated with elevated levels of certain inflammatory cytokines in the blood 1. While alcohol is linked to inflammatory diseases, the specific role of neuroimmune signaling in AUD development and severity requires further study 1.

Key Recommendations

  • Individuals with alcohol use disorder (AUD) have significantly higher concentrations of interleukin-6 (IL-6) compared to healthy controls 1. (Evidence: Moderate)
  • Other inflammatory cytokines, including tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-a, IL-1, IL-1RA, IL-2, IL-4, IL-5, IL-7, IL-8, IL-10, IL-13, IL15, interferon (IFN)-g, and sCD14, were not found to be significantly altered in individuals with AUD compared to healthy controls in a meta-analysis 1. (Evidence: Moderate)
  • Methodological heterogeneity, small study numbers, and confounding factors such as active use, abstinence, quantity of alcohol consumed, and co-occurring physical or psychiatric illnesses may explain variations in cytokine findings 1. (Evidence: Expert opinion)
