Allergic rhinitis caused by house dust mite

Overview

Interleukin-6 receptor (IL-6R) signaling is causally implicated in the susceptibility to atopic dermatitis 1. Genetic evidence indicates that pharmacological inhibition of the IL-6R pathway is associated with an increased risk of developing atopic skin disease (OR 1.78 per 4.4-mg/L reduction in C-reactive protein) 1.

Special Populations

  • Multi-ancestry populations: The causal association between IL-6R signaling and atopic dermatitis risk has been demonstrated across independent populations of European, Finnish, and East Asian ancestry 1.
  • Key Recommendations

  • Clinicians should remain vigilant for adverse effects resembling atopic dermatitis when initiating or using IL-6 receptor inhibitors 1. (Evidence: Moderate)
