Regurgitation of fetal truncal valve

Last edited: 4/10/2026

Overview

Fetal truncal valve regurgitation refers to the backward flow of blood through the truncal valve in a fetus. This can be a sign of underlying cardiac anomalies.

Diagnosis

  • Detailed fetal anatomic examination is recommended 1.
  • A panniculus retractor device may improve the completion rate of fetal anatomic examination views in pregnant patients with a BMI of 40 or higher and a panniculus 1.
  • Management

  • No management strategies for fetal truncal valve regurgitation are discussed in the provided abstracts.
  • Special Populations

  • Pregnant patients with a BMI of 40 or higher and a panniculus may benefit from the use of a panniculus retractor device during fetal anatomic examination to improve visualization 1.
  • Key Recommendations

  • Consider using a panniculus retractor device for pregnant patients with a BMI of 40 or higher and a panniculus to improve the completion rate of the fetal anatomic examination 1. (Evidence: Strong)
