Regional odontodysplasia

Last edited: 4/13/2026

Overview

Regional odontodysplasia is a rare developmental disorder characterized by abnormal enamel and dentin formation, leading to malformed teeth with structural weakness and often requiring multidisciplinary management including dental and surgical interventions. 2930

Diagnosis

  • Clinical examination revealing characteristic tooth morphology and structure abnormalities.
  • Radiographic imaging (e.g., X-rays) to assess dental anomalies and bone involvement.
  • Histopathological examination of extracted teeth may be necessary for definitive diagnosis. 2930
  • Management

  • Surgical intervention: Extraction of severely affected teeth and potential bone grafting for functional and aesthetic outcomes. 2930
  • Dental prosthetics: Customized dentures or implants to restore function and appearance. 2930
  • Orthodontic treatment: To manage spacing and alignment issues caused by missing or malformed teeth. 2930
  • Special Populations

  • Pediatrics: Early intervention is crucial; multidisciplinary teams including pediatric dentists and orthodontists are essential. 2930
  • Elderly: Focus on maintaining oral health and addressing complications that may arise from long-standing odontodysplasia. 2930
  • Comorbidities: Management should consider any systemic conditions that may affect treatment outcomes or necessitate tailored approaches. 2930
  • Key Recommendations

  • Early multidisciplinary assessment involving dental specialists to plan comprehensive treatment strategies. (Evidence: Expert opinion 29)
  • Surgical extraction of severely affected teeth followed by appropriate prosthetic rehabilitation to prevent complications. (Evidence: Expert opinion 2930)
  • Regular follow-up with dental professionals to monitor and manage long-term oral health issues. (Evidence: Expert opinion 2930)
