Binge eating disorder in remission

Last edited: 4/10/2026

Overview

Binge eating disorder (BED) is characterized by recurrent episodes of eating large amounts of food in a short period, accompanied by a sense of loss of control 1. Remission in BED can be defined by abstinence from binge eating and purging, and remittance from eating disorder diagnoses 1.

Diagnosis

  • Remission is assessed by the absence of binge eating and purging behaviors and the resolution of diagnostic criteria for an eating disorder 1.
  • Management

  • Group-delivered dissonance-based transdiagnostic eating disorder treatment (Body Project Treatment, BPT) and group-delivered transdiagnostic interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) are treatment options 1.
  • BPT demonstrated significantly greater reductions in eating disorder symptoms, pursuit of the thin ideal, anxiety symptoms, and social impairment compared to IPT through 6-month follow-up 1.
  • At the end of treatment, BPT and IPT did not significantly differ in abstinence from binge eating and purging (49% vs. 40%) or remittance from eating disorder diagnoses (54% vs. 40%) 1.
  • BPT can be implemented in-person or via synchronous video telepsychiatry with comparable efficacy in reducing eating disorder symptoms 1.
  • Key Recommendations

  • Group-delivered dissonance-based transdiagnostic eating disorder treatment (BPT) may lead to greater reductions in eating disorder symptoms, pursuit of the thin ideal, anxiety, and social impairment compared to interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) 1. (Evidence: Strong)
  • Both BPT and IPT can lead to remission from eating disorder diagnoses and abstinence from binge eating and purging, though differences may not be statistically significant at the end of treatment 1. (Evidence: Strong)
  • Body Project Treatment (BPT) is effective when delivered via synchronous video telepsychiatry, similar to in-person delivery 1. (Evidence: Strong)
