Allergic asthma caused by Dermatophagoides farinae

Last edited: 4/10/2026

Overview

Allergic asthma is a common chronic inflammatory disease of the airways characterized by reversible airflow obstruction and bronchial hyperresponsiveness 1. Dermatophagoides farinae (house dust mite) is a significant allergen contributing to allergic asthma 1.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is based on clinical history of asthma symptoms, presence of allergen sensitization to Dermatophagoides farinae*, and objective evidence of airflow obstruction or bronchial hyperresponsiveness 1. Allergen-specific IgE testing (skin prick tests or in vitro assays) can identify sensitization to Dermatophagoides farinae* 1.

Management

Allergen Avoidance: Reducing exposure to Dermatophagoides farinae* is a key management strategy 1.
  • Pharmacotherapy:
  • * Inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) are the cornerstone of long-term control therapy for persistent asthma 1. * Short-acting beta-agonists (SABAs) are used for quick relief of bronchoconstriction 1. * Other controller medications may include long-acting beta-agonists (LABAs), leukotriene modifiers, and biologics, depending on asthma severity and control 1. Allergen Immunotherapy: Sublingual or subcutaneous immunotherapy with Dermatophagoides farinae* allergens may be considered for select patients with allergic asthma to reduce symptoms and medication use 1.

    Key Recommendations

  • Reduce exposure to Dermatophagoides farinae to manage allergic asthma 1. (Evidence: Expert opinion)
  • Inhaled corticosteroids are recommended for long-term control of persistent asthma 1. (Evidence: Expert opinion)
  • Allergen immunotherapy for Dermatophagoides farinae may be considered for patients with allergic asthma 1. (Evidence: Expert opinion)
