Last edited: 4/10/2026

Overview

Gingivitis is a common inflammatory condition of the gums. Patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) may have an increased susceptibility to infections, including oral infections like gingivitis, due to impaired wound healing 1.

Diagnosis

Management

  • Blood glucose level measurements and recent HbA1c measurement should be evaluated in patients with diabetes undergoing oral surgical procedures 1.
  • Special Populations

  • Patients with diabetes mellitus may have an increased possibility of infections after surgical procedures in the oral cavity 1.
  • Key Recommendations

  • Recommendations regarding antibiotic prophylaxis prior to surgical dental operations in patients with DM are inconsistent and lack scientific evidence demonstrating effectiveness 1.
  • Blood glucose level measurements and recent HbA1c measurement should be evaluated in patients with DM 1. (Evidence: Expert opinion)
