Last edited: 4/16/2026

Overview

Iatrogenic Jakob-Creutzfeldt disease (iCJD) refers to a rare form of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) acquired through medical interventions, such as the administration of contaminated human growth hormone or dura mater grafts 1.

Diagnosis

  • Clinical presentation includes rapidly progressive dementia, myoclonus, and characteristic EEG findings 1.
  • MRI may show cortical ribboning and other neurodegenerative changes 1.
  • Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis often reveals normal protein levels but may show 14-3-3 protein in some cases 1.
  • Definitive diagnosis typically requires neuropathological examination showing spongiform changes and prion protein deposition 1.
  • Management

  • No curative treatment exists; management focuses on supportive care 1.
  • Symptomatic treatment may include benzodiazepines for myoclonus and antipsychotics for behavioral disturbances 1.
  • Seizure management with anticonvulsants as needed 1.
  • Special Populations

  • No specific guidelines provided for pregnancy, pediatrics, elderly, or comorbid conditions in the given abstracts 1.
  • Key Recommendations

  • Confirm diagnosis through neuropathological examination due to the characteristic spongiform changes and prion protein deposition (Evidence: Expert opinion 1).
  • Provide comprehensive supportive care addressing symptoms such as myoclonus and behavioral issues (Evidence: Expert opinion 1).
  • Monitor and manage complications like seizures with appropriate anticonvulsant therapy (Evidence: Expert opinion 1).
