Eosinophilic duodenal ulcer

Last edited: 4/16/2026

Overview

Eosinophilic duodenal ulcer is a rare condition characterized by the presence of eosinophils in the ulcerative lesion of the duodenum, often associated with underlying eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders or other systemic conditions. 1

Diagnosis

  • Endoscopic visualization of ulcerative lesions in the duodenum with eosinophilic infiltration 1
  • Histopathological examination showing significant eosinophil infiltration in biopsy samples 1
  • Exclusion of other causes of duodenal ulcers through clinical evaluation and laboratory tests 1
  • Management

  • Identification and treatment of underlying conditions such as eosinophilic esophagitis or parasitic infections 1
  • Corticosteroids for symptomatic relief and reduction of eosinophilic activity (dose and specific regimen not detailed) 1
  • Adjunctive use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) to manage acid-related symptoms 1
  • Special Populations

  • Limited data; management typically focuses on treating underlying causes and symptomatic relief applicable across all age groups 1
  • No specific recommendations noted for pregnancy, pediatrics, or elderly populations 1
  • Key Recommendations

  • Perform endoscopic examination with histopathological confirmation for definitive diagnosis (Evidence: Weak) 1
  • Address and treat any identifiable underlying systemic or gastrointestinal conditions contributing to eosinophilic infiltration (Evidence: Weak) 1
  • Consider corticosteroid therapy for managing eosinophilic activity, alongside PPIs for symptomatic relief (Evidence: Weak) 1
