Keutel syndrome

Last edited: 4/22/2026

Overview

Keutel syndrome is a rare, autosomal recessive genetic disorder characterized by diffuse cartilaginous calcification, nasal hypoplasia, brachytelephalangy, and peripheral pulmonary stenosis 123.

Diagnosis

  • Key Diagnostic Criteria:
  • - Diffuse cartilaginous calcification - Brachytelephalangy with sparing of the fifth distal phalanx 1 - Nasal hypoplasia - Peripheral pulmonary stenosis - Subnormal IQ in some cases 2
  • Recommended Tests:
  • - Radiographic imaging (plain radiographs of hands and chest) to assess phalangeal changes and pulmonary stenosis 1 - Audiometry for hearing loss evaluation 3

    Management

  • First-Line Treatments:
  • - Management of respiratory infections and otitis media 2 - Hearing aids for hearing loss 3
  • Adjunctive Treatments:
  • - Surgical intervention for severe pulmonary stenosis 2 - Supportive care for developmental delays 2

    Special Populations

  • Pediatrics:
  • - Frequent monitoring for respiratory infections and hearing issues 23 - Early intervention for developmental support 2
  • Comorbidities:
  • - Pulmonary stenosis may require surgical correction 2

    Key Recommendations

  • Radiographic imaging of hands and chest is essential for diagnosing Keutel syndrome due to characteristic phalangeal changes and pulmonary stenosis (Evidence: Moderate 1).
  • Regular audiometric evaluations are recommended to manage hearing loss associated with Keutel syndrome (Evidence: Moderate 3).
  • Surgical management should be considered for severe cases of peripheral pulmonary stenosis to improve respiratory function (Evidence: Expert opinion 2).
