Fracture of ilium

Last edited: 4/10/2026

Overview

The iliotibial band (ITB) is a thick band of fascia that runs down the outside of the thigh, from the hip to the shinbone just below the knee. Iliotibial band syndrome (ITBS) is a common overuse injury, particularly in runners 1.

Diagnosis

  • Female runners with current ITBS exhibited smaller peak hip internal rotation angles and lower isometric hip abductor strength compared to controls 1.
  • Management

  • No management strategies are discussed in the provided abstracts.
  • Special Populations

  • ITBS is twice as likely to affect female runners compared to male runners 1.
  • Risk factors for ITBS may differ between female and male runners and can vary based on injury status 1.
  • Key Recommendations

  • Female runners with current iliotibial band syndrome may exhibit smaller peak hip internal rotation angles and lower isometric hip abductor strength compared to controls 1. (Evidence: Moderate)
  • Risk factors for iliotibial band syndrome may differ between female and male runners and can vary according to injury status 1. (Evidence: Moderate)
