Erosion of teeth

Last edited: 4/14/2026

Overview

Erosion of teeth refers to the loss of tooth enamel or dentine due to chemical dissolution, often caused by acids from dietary habits, intrinsic factors like saliva composition, or extrinsic factors such as acidic beverages and environmental conditions. 112

Diagnosis

  • Clinical Examination: Identification of characteristic lesions and wear patterns on teeth.
  • Patient History: Assessment of dietary habits, particularly acidic food and drink consumption.
  • Salivary Analysis: Evaluation of saliva flow rate and buffering capacity to assess protective factors against erosion.
  • Profilometry/Microscopy: Quantitative measurement of tooth surface loss for grading severity. 12
  • Management

  • Behavioral Modifications: Reduction in consumption of acidic foods and beverages.
  • Fluoride Therapy: Use of fluoride varnishes or gels to strengthen enamel and reduce sensitivity.
  • Dietary Counseling: Guidance on optimal dietary choices to minimize acid exposure.
  • Oral Hygiene: Enhanced brushing techniques and use of non-abrasive toothpaste to prevent further wear. 12
  • Special Populations

  • Pediatrics: Increased vigilance on dietary habits; fluoride treatments may be crucial for developing teeth. 12
  • Elderly: Consideration of dry mouth conditions (xerostomia) which exacerbate erosion; fluoride applications and saliva stimulants recommended. 12
  • Key Recommendations

  • Implement dietary modifications to reduce acid intake, particularly among high-risk groups (Evidence: Moderate 12).
  • Apply fluoride treatments to enhance enamel resistance and manage sensitivity (Evidence: Moderate 12).
  • Provide personalized oral hygiene instructions focusing on non-abrasive practices (Evidence: Expert opinion 12).
