Varicose veins of nasal septum with ulcer

Last edited: 4/23/2026

Overview

Varicose veins of the nasal septum with ulcer are rare conditions characterized by dilated and tortuous veins within the nasal septum, often leading to ulceration and potential complications such as bleeding and infection. These lesions are distinct from more common lower extremity varicose veins and require specialized management.

Diagnosis

  • Clinical examination revealing dilated, twisted veins within the nasal septum
  • Presence of ulceration with possible signs of infection or bleeding
  • Imaging studies (e.g., endoscopy, Doppler ultrasound) to assess venous anatomy and flow dynamics 123
  • Histopathological examination if necessary to rule out other causes of ulceration 7
  • Management

  • First-line treatments:
  • - Endovascular interventions (e.g., endovenous laser ablation, microwave ablation) tailored to the specific anatomy 456 - Surgical excision or avulsion of the affected segment of the nasal septum 116
  • Adjunctive treatments:
  • - Wound care including debridement, appropriate dressings, and infection control 1314 - Compression therapy to reduce venous pressure (though less commonly applied in nasal context) 117 - Postoperative rehabilitation focusing on continuous nursing care to prevent complications 1

    Special Populations

  • Pregnancy: Recurrence or exacerbation of varicose veins, including nasal septum involvement, is possible due to hormonal changes and increased venous pressure 25
  • Elderly: Increased risk of complications such as delayed wound healing and higher susceptibility to infections 113
  • Key Recommendations

  • Primary intervention should be endovascular or surgical based on anatomical assessment (Evidence: Moderate 456)
  • Comprehensive wound management is essential to prevent infection and promote healing (Evidence: Moderate 1314)
  • Postoperative care should include continuous nursing support to monitor for complications (Evidence: Expert opinion 1)
  • Consider patient-specific factors such as pregnancy status when planning treatment (Evidence: Moderate 25)
